How much fits in a 12-yard tipper?

Twelve cubic yards is hard to picture until you see it filled. This is what actually goes in, and where the limits are.

The volume

Twelve cubic yards is roughly the volume of a standard builders skip and a half. In household terms it takes the contents of a small flat: sofa, bed, wardrobe, appliances and a stack of boxes, with room to spare.

The weight limit

A full load is capped at 1.5 tonnes. That is a legal and safety limit on the vehicle, not a pricing trick.

For heavy material that works out at about 60 rubble bags. If your waste is mostly rubble, soil or turf, expect to hit the weight limit with the truck only part full.

Estimating your own load

A useful rule of thumb: a washing machine-sized box of waste is roughly a quarter of a cubic yard. Count how many of those you have and divide by twelve.

  • Small load — a few bags, one or two items of furniture
  • Quarter load — a small room's worth of clutter
  • Half load — a typical garden clearance or kitchen rip-out
  • Full load — a flat clearance or a large garden project
